Fifth form student Apollo Petrova, a member of The Wellington Creative Writing Society, has been announced as one of the 15 Foyle Young Poets of the Year.
As one of the largest literary competitions in the world, this is a defining award for young poets. The award has kick-started the careers of some of today’s most exciting new voices in the literary world.
This year’s competition attracted 12,288 poems from 5,846 poets from 69 countries. Apollo attended the ceremony in London and her poem has been featured in the national press.
The winners are invited to attend a week’s residential creative writing course run by the Arvon Foundation; which is particularly apt as Apollo wrote her winning poem when attending another residential writing course with The Wellington Creative Writing Society.
There was also good news for upper sixth student, Gianni Fortes, who was placed in the top 100.
