Young Solihull cricketers honoured by Bears

Five young Solihull School cricketers have seen their fine seasons recognised with awards at the WCCC annual presentation evening

Sam Graham (11), Ashish Chakrapani (12), Alfie Blundell (13), Ethan Plain (13) and Ethan Brookes (15) all won Development of Excellence Awards during the gala dinner held at Edgbaston.

As well as representing their county, all five are Solihull sports scholars and played their part in another hugely successful season for the school’s cricket sides, which culminated in the under-13 team being crowned winners of the English Schools Cricket Association cup.

Graham took 21 wickets on his way to being awarded the WCCC under-11 players’ player trophy. Chakrapani took the boys under-12 Warwickshire Bear Award, while Ethan Plain was presented with the under-13 Warwickshire Bear Award.

Blundell was rewarded for a fine all-round season, which included scoring an unbeaten 60 on tour, with the under-13 players’ player award, while under-15s captain Brookes was the team’s players’ player after hitting two centuries which included a career-best 132 not out against Staffordshire.

Former Warwickshire and England all-rounder Darren Maddy is master of cricket at Solihull School. He said: “All of our boys have showed great dedication to improving their game over the past season. Their hard work was not only rewarded in terms of results, including the national cup triumph for our under-13s, but also with this recognition from Warwickshire.”

Paul Greetham, elite cricket performance manager at Warwickshire CCC, said: “It’s a great achievement for Solihull School to be so well represented at the club’s awards. We present two awards in each age group. The Warwickshire Bear award reflects not only performances, but the manner and spirit in which the boys have played their cricket.”
