Youngest HMC headteacher to join Kelvinside

Former Shiplake College deputy head Ian Munro to be new head of Kelvinside Academy, making him the youngest HMC headteacher at 34

Deputy Head Academic at Shiplake College, Ian Munro, has been appointed as the headteacher of Kelvinside Academy, a leading HMC independent school of 600 girls and boys in Glasgow. Ian will be taking up the position of Rector, a title often used by schools in Scotland, from April 2016 when he will have just turned 34.

Ian joined Shiplake College in September 2013, having previously taught at Heriot’s and Gordonstoun in Scotland. During his tenure he has further helped Headmaster, Gregg Davies, to build up the reputation of Shiplake as a centre for innovative teaching and learning, increasing the culture of high expectations of both staff and pupils. Other achievements include empowering the Heads of Department, not least by reviewing the way teaching and learning is monitored, and introducing a new reporting system on pupils’ progress. In addition, he led the school through their full ISI inspection in April 2015, which saw Shiplake graded as excellent across all nine aspects of school life.

This appointment is the fifth promotion to headship of Shiplake staff in as many years. Ian says: “I am looking forward to the challenge that my new role of head will present but I will be very sorry to leave Shiplake. It has been a privilege to be part of such an exciting and progressive time at the College, which has seen the school achieve its best ever GCSE and A-level results over the last two years.”

Headmaster Gregg Davies thanked Ian for his contribution to the development of Shiplake College. He said: “Achieving a headship at this early stage in his career is an impressive and rarely achieved feat, but one which reflects Mr Munro’s ambition, leadership and love of learning. I wish Ian and his wife Catherine well for the future and am certain that he will lead Kelvinside to achieve many great things. I am confident that we will appoint a high-calibre candidate to succeed Mr Munro, and that the drive to move Shiplake forward will continue.”
