Staff appointments: July/August 2020

Congratulations to the following on their recent appointments (taken from the July/August 2020 issue of Independent Education Today)

The Royal School

Pippa Smithson has joined The Royal School in Surrey as its new head, succeeding Anne Lynch who retired last term. Smithson was previously deputy head (academic) of Dunottar School in Reigate and is an accredited ISI inspector. She has also been part of the leadership team at Reigate Grammar School, and held teaching and management posts in schools in Australia.

She said: “In these unprecedented times we have been, and continue to be, agile in our thinking; we have adapted quickly and flexibly to ensure the best education for our pupils, who are thriving through our remote learning programme.”

Bradford Grammar Junior School

The newly appointed headmaster of Bradford Grammar Junior School in Yorkshire, Richard Ribeiro, said he has been impressed by the adaptability and engagement of his pupils during the Covid-19 pandemic. He joined the school from his position as deputy head at Wakefield Girls’ High School.

He said: “I’m seeing how resilient and creative they are in the way that they’ve responded to this pandemic. They’ve got a real ‘can-do’ attitude which is great to see.” Ribeiro represented GB Students Rugby League at university and is keen to champion sport and music at the junior school.

St Swithun’s Prep School

St Swithun’s Prep School in Winchester has appointed Mark Heffernan as its new head of sport from the summer term. An accomplished cricketer and cricketing coach, Heffernan currently plays in the Southern Premier Cricket League. He is also an endurance athlete with eight marathons and an ultra-marathon under his belt. Heffernan joined St Swithun’s Prep from Ditcham Park School.

He said: “I look forward to using all my experience, both professionally and personally to further the development of sport at the school and to ensure each and every child has the opportunity to flourish within the sports programme.”

DLD College London

DLD College London has appointed a new vice-principal (boarding), James Kidd, who will join the school at the start of the new academic year in August 2020. Kidd joins DLD College London from St. John’s School, Leatherhead where he is currently assistant headteacher (boarding and co-curricular). He is also a governor at a state school.

He said: “I am passionate about holistic education and the development of young people and I am so pleased to be joining the talented DLD College London team where I can support the school with its ambitious development plans and growth strategy over the years to come.”
