What are your school’s plans for sport in autumn/winter?

We asked four directors of sport about the innovative sports and programmes being rolled out in the new academic year
Dr Scott Drawer, director of sport, Millfield School

“Pupils have told us that they want to try gymnastic-based sports and activities, so we’re excited to launch Parkour as a new sport. Millfield’s modern, open campus is the perfect place to try it, with research showing that artistic sports provide a crucial foundation for anyone who does any form of PE or sport.

“For a school like Millfield, with a traditional and varied sports programme, we recognise that we need to stay in touch with emerging sports. Our new £2.6m state-of-the-art indoor golf and cricket centres will also open in November, placing Millfield at the forefront of school and university facilities for both sports.”

Richard Harrison-Poole, director of sport, Bournemouth Collegiate School

“At BCS, along with my fantastic team, I work hard to offer many exciting opportunities for students. This could be in either curriculum-based lessons or as one of our activities in our extensive co-curricular programme. We shall see a continuation of our following sports academy programmes, rugby with Bath, rowing with Christchurch Rowing, football with AFCB, tennis with West Hants, Seahawks basketball, triathlon and cross country, badminton and the growth of our excellent BCS swimming club.

“In addition to this, we have some exciting developments for next term including AFCB coaching to all girls in years 7–11 with potential opportunities for those talented players to access the player pathway, and mountain biking with Dorset Adventures, to name just two.”

Debbie Skene, director of sport, Rugby School

“Rugby School is rolling out a new athlete development programme in autumn 2019 which, supported by a coaching ideology, will provide daily monitoring supported by GPS trackers – in training, matches and weekly performance analysis seminars. This will help ‘pre-hab’, reducing chances of injury and increasing physical performance.

“It is also embarking on its first dual sport tour for junior students, taking the boys’ U15 hockey team and the girls’ U15 netball team to Belfast. Rugby School’s coaches use a ‘dictionary of sport’ which encourages the same terminology across its wide provision of sport across the year and a fast transfer of skills across all activities, enabling students to become keen all-rounders.”

Graham Smith, director of sport and head of rugby, Glenalmond College

“This year, we will be embarking on an exciting new partnership with London Scottish RFC. As we are now the official ‘school partner’ of London Scottish, the first activity taking place in the next few weeks will see the 40-strong professional squad taking up residence at school for a three-day training camp in advance of their friendly against Edinburgh.

“Glenalmond’s 1st XV will also be spending the week on-site for pre-season training and we will undoubtedly benefit from the experience of their coaches, as well as being able to observe and mix with the professional rugby players whilst they are here.”
