Ashville scores a hat-trick

Three England call-ups for Ashville College sporting stars

Posted by Stephanie Broad | February 23, 2016 | Sports & Leisure

The sporting prowess of three Ashville College students has been rewarded by call-ups to national level teams.

Will Farrar, 15, who plays hockey for both Ashville and Harrogate Hockey Club, has been training with Pennine Pumas, the England Hockey U16 squad for the North of England.

This has seen Will, who has been ranked as one of the best 120 boys in the country, competing in matches against teams representing the East, South and West of England.

Upper sixth former Izzy Da Costa, 17, who plays for Ashville and at club level with Thirsk Hockey club, has also been training with the Pennine Pumas’ England U18 squad for the North of England.

Izzy, who has played against Scotland and Wales, is hoping that if she can maintain her current form over the next year, she will be called up to the England U21 team.

Meanwhile, upper sixth form rugby player Harry Johnson has been picked to play for the Independent Schools Northern Lambs squad, and has been named to play in the national squad against the Irish Exiles.

Seventeen-year-old Harry, who plays in the second row, is travelling with the national team this Easter to South America, where they will play against teams from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

Duncan Archer, Ashville College’s Head of Sport Development, said: “I’m delighted for Will, Izzy and Harry, all of whom deserve this national recognition.

“They are outstanding players in their chosen sports and are great role models for younger pupils determined to play at regional and national levels.

“Ashville is fast becoming a byword for sporting success at both team and individual levels. Our partnership programme with leading Yorkshire clubs is expanding and our investment in our sporting facilities continues apace.”
