Diploma success for Truro School musicians

Five Truro School musicians celebrate the accreditation of their music diplomas, the next step beyond Grade 8 music distinction

Truro students Katie Shaw (flute), Charlotte Brenton (oboe), Molly Carleston (oboe), Matt Shaw (saxophone) and Ryan Huxtable (tuba) all undertook the Diploma of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examination (DipABRSM) during the summer holidays and the results have just been released.

All five students passed and can now add the letters ‘DipABRSM’ after their name; an accolade intended for end of first-year university and music college students. 

The talented musicians now join upper sixth form student Eleanor Sullivan (second in from the right) and recent leaver Kitty Broger-Bareham in a prestigious list of the school’s DipABRSM holders.

Martin Palmer, Director of Music at Truro School, said: “We are used to our musicians leaving Truro School with their Grade 8 distinctions, however, more and more pupils are now opting to go one stage further and take the DipABRSM examination.”

Having passed her diploma two years ago, sixth form student Eleanor Sullivan has since enjoyed playing with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at major concerts up and down the country, and at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. 

Eleanor said: “It is a massive orchestra and a really amazing experience. Now in my second year in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain I have been given more exposed playing time in the form of solos.”

With over 60 concerts planned this school year, the provision of music at Truro School has a promising future ahead.
