The new academic year is well underway, but the future of academies and free schools remains unclear as everything from free meals to providing enough school places goes under the microscope. What we do know, however, is that there are great things happening in our academies - including fabulous food and drink provision (our special feature on page 8).

What else is in the issue? We look at AV-supported teaching on page 20 and learn the benefits of an international exchange programme on page 29. Our finance feature looks at how schools make the most of their funding (page 32) and we talk to the managing director of Erudition Schools Trust in this issue's Q&A on page 30.
