Geography students visit The Gambia

Budding geographers from Cheadle Hulme School visit the schools in The Gambia that they help support through their fundraising

The Gambia was the destination for the trip of a lifetime for 13 sixth form geographers from Cheadle Hulme School (CHS), visiting West Africa to investigate life in less developed countries and visit the schools and women’s cooperative group which CHS supports.

Studying forests and rice plantations together with towns, villages and schools in the country, the lower and upper sixth students had a unique insight into the human and physical geography of The Gambia during their week-long stay in December.

The group also visited the schools and women’s group which students at CHS raise money to help support each year, delivering much needed stationery and sports equipment. They joined in with classroom activities and laid the four foundation stones of a new skills centre which CHS has helped to fund through its donations.

Head of geography, Mrs Corrie Shallcross, said: “To have the chance to visit some of the least developed areas of a country in this intimate way is a rare opportunity for our students; one which many will never repeat.

“From games of football with primary school pupils to traditional dancing with village communities, it is an experience which will stay with them for many years to come.”
