Schools enjoy a day of chemistry at Cheltenham Ladies'

Chemistry Conference at Cheltenham Ladies' College attracts pupils from local schools

Pupils from preparatory, primary and senior schools enjoyed a day of science demonstrations and fascinating lectures as they joined the girls at Cheltenham Ladies’ College for a Chemistry Conference.

To begin the conference, GCSE and sixth form pupils from CLC and surrounding schools, were invited to listen to talks sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), not only about the curriculum but also exciting new developments in science and research.

Students are entertained by RSC speakers

The guest speakers included top scientists, Tim Harrison, talking about the Chemistry of Fragrances and Abi Coveney speaking on Nanochemistry: Sugars, drugs and nanoholes, both from the University of Bristol. Nick Barker from the University of Warwick also gave a talk entitled Give Me Strength, about the chemistry of energy sources.

The afternoon saw pupils from primary and preparatory schools, including students from Hopelands, Berkhampstead, Airthrie, Chandlings Manor and Dormer House, attend a chemistry demonstration Gases of the Air from scientist and RSC Teacher Fellow, Tim Harrison.

Demonstrations of chemical reactions had impressive results

Students watched as demonstrations investigated the chemistry behind the gases we breathe, the conversions between states of matter, and what is and is not a chemical reaction, as well as looking at fire and how man has manipulated it to his own advantage, with some with explosive results.

Matt Gill, Head of Chemistry at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, said: “The conference provided an inspiring opportunity for students from across the region to learn about some cutting edge chemistry.”
