The Future of Security

It is becoming more and more important to keep up to date with not only cyber security but also physical security.

More and more physical objects are gaining internet connection. It’s not just our computers anymore; it’s our cars, phones and even fridges. This is likely to present a greater risk to personal security in the future, because where there is internet connectivity, there’s a chance for breach. This is why it is becoming more and more important to keep up to date with not only cyber security but also physical security.

Security Risks – How They’re Changing

The inclusion of network capabilities in everyday physical objects presents risk. In 2013, seven Iranian men successfully hacked into and shut down a small dam in New York, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. In providing connectivity to the internet, a full piece of US infrastructure was successfully breached by men on another continent. Proximity was no issue, as it has been in the past. These are not isolated incidents either, nor are they restricted to government infrastructure. A fridge was recently caught sending spam emails in a botnet attack, in addition to televisions, routers and multimedia centres. Every day objects are just as vulnerable, if not more, to the threat of cyber security.

 Improving Cybersecurity – Simple Steps

The threat is clear, but what’s solution? How do we defend ourselves from increasing threats to personal security? There are several things the average person can do to protect themselves from cyber threats. Using security software and antivirus software on mobiles, computers and tablets is a good start, but it’s not enough. Consumers must be ‘in the know’ when it comes to security. This includes being able to recognise dodgy emails or phone calls. There is plenty of information online to inform you about current threats like ransomware, so it is wise to keep updated. It is also wise to consider investing in your security. An increasing threat of cyber security, is an increasing threat on personal security. Physical security is therefore just as important as its digital counterpart, so it must not be ignored.

Improving physical security – The Final Frontier

Physical security is the last line of defence. When our everyday objects are susceptible to breach, it is imperative to ensure something stands in the way of us and them. The first line of physical security for your property is the perimeter, more specifically, the points of access. The gates at Buckingham Palace may be beautiful, but they also serve a purpose. They prevent those who don’t belong gaining unwanted access to the property. Physical security need not be gold plated, basic security options such as automated gates are a great place to start. Automated gates from the likes of Portcullis Gates can include all sorts of features and accessories, including but not limited to cameras, digital keys and voice communications between the occupants and whoever stands at the gate.

 What’s Next?

So, it’s clear that threats to our security are increasing. This can be largely attributed to the growth of cybercrime. But don’t forget, cybercrime doesn’t just threaten your data. With more and more personal items subject to cyber security threats, it is becoming a personal threat to you and your home. It is therefore important that physical security is not neglected, and is good way to ensure a peace of mind.
