Eltham College’s 1st XI hockey team were crowned Kent Hockey Champions on 10 February at the Kent Cup Finals competition, held at Tonbridge School. Kent is one of the top counties in the country for schools’ hockey and Eltham College was represented in the three main age groups of the U14s, U16s and U18s for the first time.

After beating a tough Skinners’ School team 3-2 in the semi-final, the U18s went through to meet Langley Park School for Boys in the final. Eltham College 1st XI won the final 2-1.

Director of Hockey, Mr Edd Thorogood, commented: “Throughout both the semi-final and final, the boys kept their heads, despite the tough opposition and twists and turns of the game. Captain Louis Dods showed the way for the team by scoring the first goal of the day, making it 1-1 with a smart turn and strike. Top scorer Jake Owen was a constant threat throughout and scored both goals in the final while in the last tense ten minutes, three outstanding saves from Jason Loveless in goal ensured Eltham College were crowned Kent Cup Champions.”

Hockey is one of three core sports at Eltham College and in recent years has been strengthened with the arrival of professional Hockey Coach Mr Calum Giles, double Olympic athlete capped 143 times by Great Britain and England. Calum is also Head Coach of Blackheath and Old Elthamians Hockey Club, located at Eltham College since 2012 where many of the Eltham College boys play from age seven through to senior mens’ level.
