The Chairman of Governors of Abingdon School, Adrian Burn, has announced the appointment of Michael Windsor as Headmaster of the leading independent day and boarding school for boys. He will succeed Felicity Lusk and take up the position in September 2016.

Michael Windsor is currently the Headmaster of Reading Blue Coat School where he has enjoyed notable success since his appointment there in September 2008.

Announcing the new appointment, Adrian Burn said: “We are extremely fortunate to have had such a strong field of candidates from which to appoint the new Head of the Abingdon Foundation.  In Michael Windsor I believe we have found an inspiring leader with a wealth of experience, foresight and determination. I, and my fellow governors, very much look forward to working with him.”

Michael Windsor was educated at Bristol Cathedral School and subsequently at the University of Durham where he got a first class degree in German with French. Speaking about his appointment, he said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the Abingdon Foundation and to build on an exceptional legacy. The school has a tremendous history and is well placed to enjoy an equally impressive future. I very much look forward to guiding that future.”

Having taught English at the British School in Italy, Michael Windsor completed his PGCE at the Institute of Education in London. In 1996, he was appointed to teach Modern Languages at King’s College School, Wimbledon where he became part of the Senior Management Team in 2000.  In 2003 he took the post of Deputy Head of the Royal Grammar School in Guildford remaining there until taking his current position as Headmaster at Reading Blue Coat School.

A former Chairman of the South Central division of HMC (the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference), he now serves on the HMC Academic Policy Committee and is currently Chairman of the Society of Heads.

The Head of Abingdon School, Felicity Lusk, who retires in August 2016, said: “With the appointment of Michael Windsor, I am very confident that when I leave Abingdon in a year’s time the School will be in extremely capable hands.  It is an exceptional school with very talented staff and pupils and I feel certain that he will enjoy his time here as much as I have.”
