Nottingham Girls' High School conquers Kilimanjaro

Nottingham students return from a challenging three-week expedition to Tanzania

A team of fourteen Nottingham Girls’ High School students have been welcomed home, after conquering Mt Kilimanjaro as part of a challenging three-week expedition to Tanzania.

The team visited the Swahili Coast and Dar es Salaam as well as completing an ambitious 12-day trek, ending up at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, before spending three days constructing a primary school classroom in the village of Machame.

The expedition was led by Aysa Hardy from the trip organisers World Challenge, alongside the school’s Head of Outdoor Learning Jen Lynn, who comments: "The girls who took part in this expedition have truly had their limits tested but they faced their challenges head on and achieved their goals. They worked hard, had fun and made some incredible memories. It was an inspiration and privilege to share this experience with them."

Nottingham Girls’ High School Head, Sue Gorham, comments: “We’re all so proud of our students. A trip like this takes real strength of character, commitment and courage – attributes the team have shown in spades. Our girls have accomplished so much in Tanzania and know that with hard work, passion and a drive to succeed, anything is possible.”

In preparation for the trip, the sixth form girls started training in earnest 10 months ago with a training expedition weekend in Staffordshire. Since then, they have followed a programme of events designed to equip them with the skills needed for a Tanzanian trek.

The girls in the self-named ‘Kili Kids’, who were selected for the trip based on the results of fitness tests and a written application, raised over £50,000 for their trip to Tanzania through a series of individual and group fundraising events and activities.
