A teacher who has given 42 years of outstanding service was put in the black chair by his pupils for his own version of Question Time at his leaving party.
David Gordon, headmaster of Morley House, known as Mr Gordon to the students and Grandpa Bald to his grandchildren, is retiring from Lewes Old Grammar School (LOGS) this week.
‘Mr G’s Question Time’ was staged by the children to learn all about his history at LOGS. Questions ranged from what he did before coming to the school to who was the naughtiest child in the school.
When asked about his favourite memory of the school, David was unable to answer. “I have so many memories and I love them all,” he said, adding that one of his first was of teaching LOGS bursar Tim Laker when he was a pupil there.
Family, teachers, current and former pupils joined David to express their thanks for his support over the years and give their best wishes for his future, while each year group presented a large card containing their individual messages of thanks and good luck. Plaudits flowed from teachers and pupils alike.
Gifts from fellow teachers and trustees included a large garden chair and a few bottles to imbibe while relaxing in it. The party also included a huge cake made by former pupil, Mia Taggart. David thanked everyone for their gift and good wishes and said he looks forward to a family holiday in Florida and playing more golf.
Paying tribute, a trustee and previous headmaster, Roy Mead, said the day David joined LOGS, “The school got its most loyal, calm and wonderful teacher”, while another teacher remarked that after 21 years of working with him, they had never had a cross word.
