IB and World Academy of Sport extend partnership

Student athletes at IB World Schools will now enjoy a greater choice of study, including a new online course covering international sport management

The partnership between International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools and the World Academy of Sport (WAoS) has been extended.

To date, 25 IB World Schools have been accredited by WAoS as Athlete Friendly Education Centres (AFEC), with student athletes offered the opportunity to extend their IB Diploma Programme (DP) studies. The partnership’s extension will mean a similar offer for students on the IB Career-related Programme (CP).

“It is most exciting that we are able to extend the provision of flexibility for student athletes wishing to undertake the CP,” said IB director of outreach and conferences, Haif Bannayan.

“This unique approach provides a global framework to those students who are strongly committed to excelling in both their sport aspirations and their education studies.”

IB World Schools students will also be offered access to a new online course on international sport management, developed in collaboration between WAoS and Federation University, based in the Australian city of Ballarat.

“The opportunity to engage with the AFEC project – and now a CRS offer for international sport management – is very exciting, as it provides a basis for IB World Schools to engage with their local and national sport sectors in meaningful and practical ways,” added Bannayan.

“We strongly believe in the IB’s mission to create a better world through education,” said WAoS managing director, Chris Solly. “Our work with the IB continues to be a great motivator for us to expand opportunities for those involved in sport and those interested in careers in the international sport sector.”

In the wake of Covid-19, WAoS has launched an education support package for IB World Schools bidding to tackle challenges caused by the pandemic. Launched in July, the support package is set to run until January 2022. The measures include:

  • 100 scholarships to help schools looking to develop athlete-friendly educational structures
  • The creation of 3,500 post-graduate scholarships in international sport management for PE and sport teachers
  • The bestowing of up to 25,000 WAoS Athlete Certificate scholarships
