Inspiring future leaders: BSA conference for Deputy Heads and Heads of Boarding

The Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) is holding their Annual Conference for Deputy Heads and Heads of Boarding from January 30-February 1 to help educators gain the tools they need to navigate the changing education landscape

The political, social and technological changes of recent years have made directing a school into the future appear a somewhat daunting task. The conference is intended to inform delegates of updates in the boarding sector, while providing them with practical skills, leadership development and to successfully guide their school into the future.

Headline speaker, Gareth Doodes, head of Dover College, said: “The programme for the conference this January is diverse, with talks on emotional health, creating a safer culture and legal issues among others. I’m giving a talk on the importance of relationships when it comes to school leaders. And it is relationships that matter most.

“There’s many a moment when, as a deputy head or a head, you find yourself staring at the wall of your office as you make important – and often pivotal – decisions about staff and children. The houseparent or head of department have given you their thoughts, you’ve read the paperwork and the only person left who can make the call is you.

A conference isn’t just about professional development, it’s also about personal development

“Often by attending conferences it’s not what goes on in the conference hall but conversations over dinner and in the bar afterwards. Because a conference isn’t just about professional development, it’s also about personal development. It’s about making friends, sharing stories, planning careers, all with people who understand boarding.

“And when you are back at school and alone, the houseparent or head of department has left and you have to make the call, you now know people you then can call to ask advice. The BSA does many brilliant things, but reminding you that you’re not alone is its greatest gift.”

Robin Fletcher, BSA chief executive, said: “The conference is an exciting opportunity for the BSA and for delegates to discuss with experts and colleagues the challenges and opportunities that leaders have to deal with every day. And of course the conference dinner is a highlight – a great chance to let our hair down and network with colleagues from across the UK, EU and internationally.”

The BSA serves and represents member boarding schools, training staff and promoting boarding education in both independent and state boarding schools. The BSA is the premier supplier of conference and training events to boarding schools, which are geared towards educators and support staff, and provide attendees with useful advice and expert knowledge on a wide range of topics.
