The political, social and technological changes of recent years have made directing a school into the future appear a somewhat daunting task. Headline speaker, Gareth Doodes, head of Dover College, said: “The programme for the conference this January is diverse, with talks on emotional health, creating a safer culture and legal issues among others. I’m giving a talk on the importance of relationships when it comes to school leaders. And it is relationships that matter most.
“There’s many a moment when, as a deputy head or a head, you find yourself staring at the wall of your office as you make important – and often pivotal – decisions about staff and children. “Often by attending conferences it’s not what goes on in the conference hall but conversations over dinner and in the bar afterwards. It’s about making friends, sharing stories, planning careers, all with people who understand boarding.
“And when you are back at school and alone, the houseparent or head of department has left and you have to make the call, you now know people you then can call to ask advice. The BSA does many brilliant things, but reminding you that you’re not alone is its greatest gift.”
