The Stamford School first XV team have played some hard-fought matches against Oundle, Uppingham, Bedford and Rugby. The side continued their unbeaten run on Saturday with a commanding 57-0 victory over John Cleveland College. Acknowledging their accomplishments, the world’s biggest-selling rugby magazine, Rugby World, awarded Stamford School its team of the month award.
Head of Stamford School, Will Phelan was pleased for the boys. “It’s a great reward for all the hard work the boys have put in”, he said. “The first XV of 2012 also won the award, so it’s great to get it again. I hope they keep up the hard work, and continue to strive towards ever higher goals.”
Members of the side can also celebrate recognition through representative selection. Centre James Peachey has been playing for Notts Lincs and Derby 16s in the county championship, and Callum Crellin has been playing full back for Leicestershire at u18. The under-18 County Championship was won by NLD, who had Stamford School boys Josh Allen, Henry Mawhood, Oli Davidson and Sam Butler in the squad, and first XV winger Tom Roper continues his international development with Holland. Captain Charlie Dunbar and George Cox are with Northampton Saints, with George just recently celebrating a call-up to the England u18 training squad. Old Stamfordians were in action this week, with George Nairn making his first XV debut for Leicester Tigers and Louis Grimoldby playing against Saracens for Harlequins.
First XV coach David Laventure said: “The boys have worked hard as a team and it’s brilliant to see their efforts recognised for their respective representative outfits. We’re obviously all really pleased for George, who has the chance now to go on and represent his country in the new year as other Stamfordians have in the past.”
