The initiative from Horsham District Sports Development, the Council’s sports team, aims to put youth volleyball on the local map. The coach will be Zbigniew Adamczyk, better known in the volleyball world as ‘Ziggy’, and he will bring a wealth of experience, having coached professionally at youth level on the continent and in his native Poland, where volleyball is a national sport.
The Olympic sport’s key skills are digging and setting to move the ball between teammates, serving the ball into play, spiking to attack the opposition half, and blocking to defend against attacks. The girls will learn all these moves and combine everything with team shape and tactics. Whether girls are new to the game, beginners or have played before, all will be welcome to have fun, improve and make new friends.
Sara Whittaker, Farlington’s Director of Sport, said: “This is a fantastic initiative from Horsham Council’s Sports Team and we are delighted to provide our facilities. Getting girls involved in team sport has so many more benefits than just fitness: social skills, self-esteem, motivation and focus, to name just a few. I hope that girls from many other schools in and around Horsham will give this exciting sport a go.”
Sessions will run term-time on Tuesday evenings, 6.30-8pm starting on 16th January. The first two classes are free of charge. There is no need to book, just turn up. If you have any questions, please contact Ian Ford by emailing Ian.ford@horsham.gov.uk or calling 07764 146338.
