Scarborough College adds ‘Grit’ to the curriculum

One afternoon a week to be dedicated to ‘Yorkshire Grit’ character education course at Scarborough

For over 120 years, Scarborough College has educated girls and boys from North and East Yorkshire, providing them with the character, tenacity and resilience to make a success of themselves in the world beyond school. Recognising the importance of life beyond the classroom, for the forthcoming academic year they have added a course entitled Yorkshire Grit to the timetable!

All pupils in years seven, eight and nine will benefit from an afternoon every week which is designed to challenge them in a whole host of ways, whilst building their self confidence, discovering new talents and passions, and improving their mental and physical well-being.

Pupils will be stretched through an engagement in such activities as surfing, sailing at Wykeham Lakes, boot camps, rock climbing, learning judo and expedition training, as well as benefiting from courses in public speaking, mindfulness and dealing with stress.

Headmaster, Charles Ellison, commented: ‘Throughout the decades of its history, pupils from Scarborough College have been recognised to have strong character traits which, alongside their excellent academic credentials, have ensured that they have made a real difference in the world they entered when finally leaving us. There are a number of reasons for this: exposure to a wealth of challenges daily, a can-do attitude in everything we take on, our beautiful and inspiring geographical location and the seemingly natural resilience inherent in Yorkshire folk. Our establishment of a course in Yorkshire Grit synthesises these elements into the timetable to make certain all of our local pupils fully nurture their Yorkshire genetics and that our international boarders assume important Yorkshire traits which will undoubtedly help them to grow as people and to flourish in a world that presents greater and greater challenges to our young people.’
