Singing their way to the top

A junior school chamber choir impressed the judges with their positivity at this year’s Barnardo’s National Choir Competition

Hereford Cathedral Junior School’s Junior Chamber Choir came out on top in the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition 2015 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The choir was one of 18 chosen from more than 350 entries from across the UK in the junior age category.

At the Royal Festival Hall, the choir performed ‘We are the Young’ and ‘Hey Diddle’ in front of a panel of five choral specialists who said they were impressed by the children’s energy, positivity and the quality of their singing. The choir has now been invited to sing in November’s Young Supports concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Impressed by their performance, Douglas Coombe has offered to write a song especially for the Hereford choir.

Rachael Toolan, Hereford Cathedral Junior School’s head of music, said: “We were competing against 17 excellent choirs within our section and so we were truly honoured to be selected as the winners. We are all delighted.”
