Tennis at St Albans School is thriving as senior pupils won the U18 category of the Hertfordshire County Doubles Tournament, while junior pupils put in encouraging performances to bring back the U14 Plate.
Charlie Broom and George Davis, St Albans School’s senior doubles pairing, reached the competition’s final after winning their first three matches in a convincing manner.
The final, which as expected was the toughest match, saw the duo go down by 3-0. The boys rallied, however, winning the subsequent six games, ending the match 6-3 and winning the tournament.
Charlie, who has a career best world-ranking of 167, will be moving to America later this year after being awarded a tennis scholarship to Dartmouth College, an Ivy League university that has a top-40 USA nationwide team ranking. He has also been offered an unconditional academic place.
In the U14 category, Danny Anderson and Hugh Craig, who lost their opening match and were entered into the Plate competition, won all of their remaining matches to bring back the silverware. Alex Backhaus and Matt Hoole also put in highly commended performances, to reach the U14 Plate’s semi-final.

“Tennis is both an individual and team game and our current, strong crop of juniors are already bringing back trophies, which is a very positive sign for the future of the game at St Albans School.”
