Abbey College Manchester students, Quang Tri Nguyen (17) and Henry Zhang (18), battled it out amongst over 650,000 others in the UK Mathematics Trust-organised competition. They were placed in the top 1,000 and subsequently qualified for the British Mathematics Olympiad.
Quang and Henry were part of a group of six students from the college who entered the challenging contest; the other four were commended with silver and bronze awards.
Principal Liz Elam commented: “The students were required to solve extremely complex problems. The challenge demanded imaginative and creative thinking, as well as sound mathematical knowledge.
“We are incredibly proud of our students and their achievements in this national competition. All six students are exceedingly talented and we are looking forward to seeing how Quang and Henry progress further in the British Mathematical Olympiad.”
