NASUWT members reject teachers’ pay offer in England and Wales

The NASUWT – The Teachers’ Union rejects below inflation award and threatens industrial action

Members in England and Wales were surveyed following reports from the relevant pay review bodies for 2022/23. The majority of members who responded in both countries disagreed or were angry with the proposed awards with most believing that they should be rejected as inadequate or unacceptable.

Dr Patrick Roach, NASUWT general secretary, said:

“NASUWT members had been clear in demanding that we reject the imposition of a below-inflation pay award.

“This pay offer is yet another pay cut for teachers which will cause even greater damage to the morale of the profession.”

“However, in the event that there is no improvement, the Union remains committed to balloting its members in the autumn term for industrial action.” Patrick Roach, NASUWT general secretary

The NASUWT is urging the governments in England and Wales to get around the table and find a solution stating that there has been a decade of real terms pay cuts coupled with the cost-of-living crisis.

“However, in the event that there is no improvement, the Union remains committed to balloting its members in the autumn term for industrial action,” said Roach.

The NASUWT survey in England followed the publication of the report by the School Teachers Pay Review Body (STRB) on the government’s proposals on the teachers’ pay award for 2022/23

Of the nearly 9,000 teachers who responded:

  • 68% said they disagreed or were angry with the proposed award
  • 72% believe the pay award should be rejected as inadequate/unacceptable.

Members in Wales were surveyed following the publication of the report by the Independent Welsh Pay Review Body (IWPRB) on the Welsh government’s proposals for the teachers’ pay award for 2022/23.

Of the 700 teachers who responded:

  • 70% said they disagreed with or were angry with the proposed award
  • 78% believe the pay award should be rejected as inadequate/unacceptable.
