Thirty-five year four Derby pupils were recently given a guided tour of a Veolia plant in Staffordshire as part of their Geography topic about improving the environment.
They found out more about man made and natural materials, the recycling process and what they can do to improve the environment.
Sara Evans-Bolger, year four teacher in Derby High School’s Primary department, accompanied the pupils on the trip with fellow teacher Chris Horne.
She said: “They absolutely loved it. They got to see the rubbish grabber in action picking the rubbish up and putting it in the furnace. They also got to safely see the furnace, which burns at 850 Centigrade. They thought that was amazing.
“They learnt about the order in which the waste and recycling process takes place at the plant and they were allowed into the control room. They all received a goodie bag at the end of the trip too, which was lovely.
“We would like to thank Veolia for welcoming us and giving our students such a worthwhile experience.”
The children were also tested on their knowledge of the facility, how we can help the environment and the importance of the 4Rs; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover.
