Barrow Hills School in Witley has announced it will offer 11+ scholarships for the first time in the School’s history, effective from September 2016. The scholarships are open to Barrow Hills pupils as well as to children currently being educated elsewhere.

The co-educational preparatory school will make the scholarships available for entry at year seven, which will attract interest from top scholars looking to prepare for the 13+ public schools’ scholarship exams within a nurturing, progressive environment. Scholarships representing a minimum of 10% and a maximum of 30% will be offered in the following categories: academic; art; music; drama; sport and outstanding ‘all-round’ ability.  Scholarships will be awarded in each of the above categories and dependent on the ability of the applicants, it is possible that more than one scholarship may be allocated. The introduction of a scholarship offering is directly linked to Barrow Hills School’s merger with King Edward’s Witley earlier this year and the decision by the trustees of the Bridewell Royal Hospital (the charitable foundation that operates King Edward’s Witley and Barrow Hills School) to ensure the same opportunities exist for children at 11+ in both of the schools under its jurisdiction.

Barrow Hills School Headmaster, Matthew Unsworth, said: “We will be offering a matching range of scholarships to those currently awarded at King Edward’s Witley to reflect the breadth of education we offer. Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever make and it’s important to find the right school to fit you and your child’s educational needs and aspirations. These scholarships will provide families with the choice of school without being compromised by personal circumstances and finances.”

Assessments for potential candidates will take place in late November for September 2016 entry.

  • In the case of academic scholarships, these will be awarded on the basis of performance in the competitive examination and subsequent interview.
  • Art candidates will be required to bring a portfolio of their work for discussion and also complete timed drawing exercises as well as an interview.
  • Drama candidates should display an outstanding ability in acting and improvisation and an enthusiasm for performing. The candidate’s love of drama may also be reflected in their involvement in clubs, societies, LAMDA and their success in drama festivals and competitions. Candidates will be asked to memorise and perform a set audition piece as well as an interview.
  • Music candidates should have reached Grade 4 ABRSM on their principal instrument. Their audition will include performance, sight-reading, aural tests and interview.
  • Sports candidates will be required to attend a practical assessment and also provide evidence of potential for county standard in at least one of the team sports offered at Barrow Hills School. They will also undergo an interview.

Mr Unsworth added: “Naturally, we are incredibly proud to be able to offer these scholarships to exceptional candidates with a real passion, ability and clear commitment to achieve great things within our beautiful school setting.  This initiative will enable children to enjoy two outstanding years of focused preparation for the major 13+ public schools scholarship exams with the added benefit of the established excellence in pastoral care that is the hallmark of a Barrow Hills School education.”
