Redevelopment to start at historic Wolverhampton school

Tettenhall College will have a new sixth form centre, a modernised library, upgraded boarding houses and additional sporting facilities

Work is set to get under way on a £3m redevelopment project at Tettenhall College. 

The historic independent school, which has seen a recent rise in pupil numbers, has unveiled designs of how some of the new developments will look. 

Plans include a new sixth form centre, a modernised library, upgraded boarding houses and additional sporting facilities.  

The new sixth form centre at the heart of the school will provide a mezzanine ICT and study area. A brand new contemporary sixth form common room is also planned and is due to be completed by Autumn 2017.    

Sport will be given a boost with the installation of two multi-purpose games areas, for tennis, netball and football. In addition, the school’s squash courts will be given a refurbishment thanks to a former pupil’s generous legacy. Graham Aston, a keen squash player and former Head Boy, left a £400,000 legacy to the school to develop the sport.

As a result of this funding, the school is able to offer several academic scholarships available for students looking for Sixth Form places in September 2017,  open to applicants with immediate effect. 

The school’s Boarding Houses celebrate their 150th anniversary this year and will also be refurbished with a modern and welcoming new look as well as stylish ensuite bathrooms.

Headmaster David Williams said: “We are very pleased that work will begin on these exciting redevelopments at Tettenhall College. We are already proud of our educational offering to pupils and the proposed upgrades will strengthen this further.

“The work undertaken will blend the contemporary with the historic, which supports our drive to maintain traditional values while moving forward with the times.”

As part of the works, renovation of The Towers, one of Wolverhampton’s few Grade II* listed buildings, will be undertaken. The ‘Towers’ were added in 1866 by eccentric owner and inventor Colonel Thomas Thorneycroft but now houses the School’s theatre which regularly hosts local community theatre groups.

Work has already commenced on the project and will be completed over the summer holidays.
