Royal Albert Hall creates immersive history lesson

Renowned concert hall launches Victorian tour for pupils specifically designed to meet the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for History and Literacy

An immersive history lesson, the tour will see pupils join two characters from Victorian society on a journey through the age as they regale stories of the era’s most famous people and their achievements. With the Hall being an iconic feat of Victorian architecture, pupils will learn about the coronation of Queen Victoria to the fruits of the Industrial Revolution through the features of Prince Albert’s famous namesake.

Key topics pupils will cover on the tour and accompanying workshop include Nightingale and Public Health, Faraday and Electricity, Brunel and Architecture, Perkins and Cloth Dye and Dickens and Literature.

Anthony Lynch, Tours Manager for the Royal Albert Hall, said: “We are really pleased that we can bring the Victorian era to life for school pupils all over the country, so that they can immerse themselves in history like never before. Interactivity is key to engagement and we hope that by taking the lesson out of the traditional classroom setting, today’s young minds will relate to topics that are harder to identify with in a textbook. After all Queen Victoria herself built the Hall so what better setting to learn about and celebrate the era!” 

The tour is one of many education initiatives that form part of the Royal Albert Hall’s Education & Outreach programme.  Future initiatives include My Great Orchestral Adventure in October, a family concert to provide children with their first introduction to a symphony orchestra.
