Old Whitgiftian Elliot Daly receives England Cap

Following his debut England outing in a Six Nations match against Ireland in February, Old Whitgiftian Elliot Daly was recently awarded his England cap.

Daly received his call-up in January, by new coach Eddie Jones. England went on to defeat Ireland in a 21-10 victory. The Wasps RFC player received his cap from Jason Leonard OBE, President of the Rugby Football Union.

Daly attended Whitgift from 2006-2011 and was part of the School’s Daily Mail Cup winning teams, in both 2010 and 2011. He played alongside Marland Yarde (Harlequins and England rugby and Lawrence Okoye in (London 2012 Olympics discus finalist and professional NFL player). The 23 year-old has represented England at U16, U18, U20, Saxon and at Senior level.

The professional circuit has a strong Old Whitgiftian presence in addition to Elliot, with the likes of Danny Cipriani (Sale Sharks and England), Neville Edwards (Sale Sharks), Adam Thompstone (Leicester Tigers), Richard Thorpe (London Welsh), George Merrick (Harlequins), Jamie Stevenson (Wasps), Harry Williams (Exeter) and Henry Cheeseman (Harlequins).

Whitgift’s Director of Rugby, Chris Wilkins, commented: “We are all very proud of Elliot gaining his first cap. It is great to see him continue to develop as a player since he left Whitgift. To be part of the Grand Slam Squad is a fantastic achievement. It will be good to see how he progresses in the next few years.”
