In the blink of an eye the summer is nearly over and a new school year will soon begin. Although it only feels like yesterday I was writing about relaxing over the summer holidays, I am eager to see what the 2017/18 school year will bring. September is the perfect opportunity for a fresh start so it’s been fantastic to hear how you are preparing for the new term. For example, on page 13, Hilary Moriarty discusses Speech Day and how it should take place in September to set the tone for the new term. I like this idea of shaking up traditions – will your school decide to break the mould this year?

Elsewhere, this issue looks at innovative facilities in independent schools. In our special report on page 21, I discovered that schools are creating inspiring learning environments which encourage independent and collaborative learning. Similarly, on page 48, four schools reveal how technology is changing learning and discuss the impact of The Internet of Things. By using cutting-edge design and technology these schools are definitely ahead of the curve.

Once you have settled into the new year, I would recommend booking a place at some of the events mention in this issue. From sparking a debate at The Education Forum to being inspired by global perspectives at IPSEF, there are plenty of opportunities to network – I hope to see you there!
