Helen Skelton-Myler meets some fans
Helen Skelton-Myler visited Cheadle Hulme School in Cheshire in order to discuss her new book ‘Amy Wild: Amazon Summer’. This is the adventurer’s first novel and she told juniors at the school how it had been inspired by her record-breaking solo kayak journey along the entire length of the river Amazon for Sport Relief 2010.
Pupils heard about Helen’s battles with sea-sickness, the dangers of South American wildlife and how she avoided the cargo ships she shared the river with, along with a number of other setbacks she faced along the way. She also shared one of her “prized possessions” from the trip, a hand-carved oar given to her by villagers.
CHS pupils and others visiting from local primary schools quizzed Helen about the trip, her novel and her other travels before having copies of the book signed by the author.
