Cricket legend speaks at school

Edge Grove School welcomes Paul Nixon for a special assembly visit

Posted by Stephanie Broad | June 05, 2015 | School life

Local independent prep school Edge Grove welcomed English cricketer Paul Nixon through the school gates recently for a special one-off assembly.  The cricketer, who played for England and Leicestershire as wicketkeeper and left-handed batsman, visited the pupils as a special guest speaker to talk about his childhood experiences, his school life and his professional cricket career.

The children listened as Nixon also spoke to them about the Flintoff Cricket Academy that is taking place at Edge Grove School as well as his passion for ‘Zingup’, a science-based programme made up of on-screen skill tests and a personalised range of simple physical activities designed to increase brain-power. Some pupils were then lucky enough to have a 45-minute invaluable training session with Paul Nixon and he also autographed their cricket bats.

Ben Evans, headmaster at Edge Grove School, commented: “It was fantastic to welcome such a inspirational sportsman to our school.  The children were mesmerised and inspired by his stories and experiences and it was wonderful for those lucky pupils who got to have that special one to one training session – giving them some great tips and tricks for their future matches”.

Edge Grove School regularly invites interesting and inspirational speakers and sports experts to motivate its pupils during school assemblies. Previously, ex-England cricketer Martin Bicknell visited the school to share his experiences with the pupils.
