BBC News School Report is an opportunity for students to become real-life reporters, culminating in the School Report broadcast which took place in March. Using lesson plans and materials from the BBC School News website and with support from BBC staff and partners, Lockers Park teachers have been helping students develop their journalistic skills to become School Reporters. Over 1,000 schools nationwide participated in the annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them via school websites.
Five pupils worked collaboratively, interviewing pupils and researching the topic of population growth. Their final article was published on the Lockers Park school website which then linked through to the School Report official website. The roving reporters had until 2pm to finish their stories and a deadline of 4pm to publish online, giving them real-life experience of working under pressure. The team were thrilled to have the article picked up and featured on News Day itself.
Headmaster, Christopher Wilson, says: “BBC School Report is an increasingly popular event and Lockers Park pupils enjoyed becoming investigative reporters. The team surpassed themselves in terms of their dedication and commitment and we are extremely proud that their article on Population Growth made it onto News Day. Participating in this year’s event has given Lockers Park pupils a greater understanding of what it is like to be real news reporters, as well as enriching their learning through developing a wide range of transferable skills – an invaluable experience.”
