Schools: win a trip to Kenya

School Geography Challenge to raise awareness of challenges in Africa and result in volunteering trip for one school

Posted by Stephanie Broad | September 12, 2016 | International

African Adventures has launched the School Geography Challenge, which aims to increase understanding of challenges to development in Africa and will result in one school taking an all-inclusive volunteering trip to Kenya.

The national competition, the first of its kind, aims to take young geography students on an educational journey and raise awareness of geographical impacts that affect developing areas.

Competition details

  • Year nine and 10 students across the UK are eligible to enter
  • The challenge is focused on the potential impacts of El Nino flooding and international development
  • Submissions can be worked on either during lessons or as an extra-curricular activity
  • Registration must take place by 25 November and the competition closes on 23 December
  • The live final will take place in April 2017

A comprehensive resource pack is supplied for lesson plans, giving students the chance to learn about El Nino and the wider challenges to development in Africa. The winning school will win a trip to Kenya, for four students and two teachers, to see international development in action. Two runner-up schools will receive prizes.

The competition is being supported by leading UK awarding body OCR, Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) and the School Travel Forum (STF), with sponsorship from Kenya Airways.
